Local Ministries

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Mitten Tree and Warm the Children

Around the beginning of fall every year, Kirk of Our Savior begins our annual effort to help the local community stay warm.  There are 3 specific programs through which we engage in this mission.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff focuses on the collection of sweatpants, socks, and underwear for students at Wayne/Westland schools.  The goal of Mitten Tree is to procure as many hats and mittens as possible, which go to the Salvation Army.  Through Warm the Children, we work in concert with social workers of the Wayne/Westland district to distribute coats, gloves, hats, snow pants and boots to as many children in need as possible.

All donations to these programs are heartily welcomed and appreciated!

Gas Cards

Kirk of Our Savior provides $20 Speedway gas cards to local residents who need just a little bit extra in order to get by.  Two per person, per year are allowed, and all you need in order to receive one is a proper, non-expired photo identification card (preferably a driver’s license) specifying person residence in Wayne, Westland, Garden City, or Inkster.  Calling ahead before you travel to the church to get one is strongly recommended, as we have a limited supply each month.

Food Cupboard

Kirk of Our Savior has a food cupboard that sits just outside the sanctuary and in plain view of the office and lounge.  Donations to this food cupboard are made regularly by generous members at Kirk of Our Savior and it is never empty.  Any and all food in this cupboard is available (completely free of charge) to anyone who needs it; simply come by the church during office hours.  You are welcome to take as much as you can carry!

Hope 4 Healing Hearts

Hope 4 Healing Hearts is a twice monthly support group for anyone who has a loved one in prison.  It meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at the Kirk, from 6:30-8:30 PM, and is led by Kirk member Bonnie Hilberer (734-646-2237).  See flyer for details, and check out the Fox 2 story on the group: https://binged.it/2BuUuwc

Kirk of Our Savior also contributes to many other local organizations.  This past year we donated to Presbyterian Villages for their musical program.  We also contributed to Bright Futures Wayne-Westland, an Eastern Michigan University 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program which focuses on academic improvement and preparation for elementary, middle, and high school students making transitions from one educational level to the next.

Al-Anon (support group for friends and family of people suffering from alcoholism) meets at Kirk of Our Savior every Friday night from 7:45-9:30 PM.

Depression/Bipolar Support Group

Weekly depression and bipolar illness support group held in the Kirk lounge and led by Dee Coleman.  The group meets Mondays from 7:30 - 9:00 PM.  Please contact Dee at 313-300-2761 with any questions.
